What is a Cardboard Box Erector Machine?
The cardboard box erectors are carton forming machines, through erecting, folding, sealing, and other mechanical motions, they automatically convert flat corrugated box blanks into fully erected & bottom-sealed cardboard boxes.
Such an efficient corrugated box erector greatly improves the packaging efficiency of logistics, distribution, and other industries, saving more labor costs.
The demand for corrugated box erectors is increasing with the rise of online shopping.
Chinese manufacturers have customized ideal corrugated box erectors for many eCommerce customers.
Types of Case Erectors

Conventional Cardboard Erector
Conventional cardboard erectors use air-driven cylinders or motor-driven cam & con rods to suck box blanks, form & shape boxes, fold bottom flaps, convey erected boxes for bottom sealing, etc.
This type of machine has the following three common classifications:
According to Erecting Direction
As shown in the photo below, there are two different kinds of case erecting directions:
Horizontal carton erecting machines’ maximum speed can reach 50 cases/min.
Why they can reach such a high speed?
Because motor-driven cam controls its carton blank picking-up & flap folding, which is faster than compressed air drive.
In addition, they output more square cardboard boxes, and their carton blanks’ placement is more convenient.
Of course, they also have disadvantages.
They have requirements for carton hardness, and their price is much higher than the vertical type.
Refer to the figure below, you can understand the horizontal case erector’s working process clearly.
The vacuum sucker sucks a blank from the stacked carton blank magazine, adsorbs the blank’s bottom, then moves to the box erecting station.
In the box erecting station, two more vacuum suction cups absorb the carton blank’s top and apply an upward pulling force.
The bottom vacuum suckers also generate a downward pulling force at the same time.
Two pulling forces in the opposite direction erect the carton blank upright.
After erecting & forming the carton, the machine moves the carton to the next sealing station.
The horizontal case erector first folds two inner flaps, then folds two outer flaps at the bottom of the box.
Finally, the pressure-sensitive tape head applies tape on the center seam between these two outer flaps, thus sealing the bottom.
After the bottom sealing, the exit guide rod leads the carton to fall into the downstream packaging equipment;
Or these erected & bottom-sealed boxes fall directly into the pre-placed container, and workers collect them for further use.

Pre-store the carton blank in the blank magazine.
Two vacuum suction cups absorb a vertical carton blank from the magazine.
At this time, the vacuum adsorption applies a pulling force on the carton.
To shape the carton, two other vacuum suction cups adsorb the carton blank on the opposite side, stimulate a reverse pulling force, and two opposite pulling forces successfully erect & shape the carton blank.
Then, the vacuum suction cups absorb the carton to the case erecting station.
After reaching the top of the case erecting station, the erector folds the bottom inner flaps & bottom outer flaps first, then pops out the pushrod, feeding the folded carton to the sealing station.
The sealing station consists of motors, side belts, and a pressure-sensitive tape head.
After the carton enters the sealing station, it comes into contact with the side belts.
Driven by the side belts, the carton passes through the pressure-sensitive tape head at a constant speed.
The pressure-sensitive tape head seals the box, as shown in the figure below.
Finally, the erector pushes the bottom-sealed carton to the outfeed port.
The bottom-sealed carton enters the downstream packaging line or drops directly to the ground, workers collect them for manual product loading or further use.

Horizontal vs. Vertical
To better understand the difference between a vertical & horizontal cardboard box erector, please check the following comparison table.
The horizontal cardboard erector price is higher, but the horizontal case erector has one advantage: regardless of the speed, its stability is very high;
Vertical box erectors vibrate during the box pickup process, vibration may cause damage to the suction cup or loose parts, thus their maintenance frequency is relatively higher.
But many small & medium-sized enterprises still purchase the vertical type, because it is cheaper.
Based on Sealing Media
BOPP adhesive tape is the most commonly used corrugated carton bottom sealing media during the erection process.
Hot Melt Glue
Hot melt glue corrugated box bottom sealing is more environmentally friendly than BOPP tape, but the price of such an erector is higher because an additional hot melt glue applicator is essential.
Tape vs. Glue
Tape sealing & hot melt glue closure have their advantages & disadvantages.

- Tape sealing can’t keep up with high-speed case forming;
- A roll of tape runs out faster than a tank of glue, more frequent tape replacement.
- Pros & Cons of Hot Melt Glue Closure
- Higher efficiency;
- Glue replacement frequency is lower than tape replacement;
- Glue may block the hoses & nozzles;
- Over-spraying may occur, and more cleanup efforts.

According to Carton Styles
The width of Regular Slotted Containers’ outer flaps is exactly half the width of the box, and the two outer flaps meet at the container center line.
RSC is the world’s most common slotted box style due to its efficient and versatile design that minimizes waste.
Compared to the RSC containers, the Half Slotted Container (HSC) box lacks a set of top flaps.
After folding & sealing the HSC containers, its top is completely open, making it easy to load products and suitable for displaying loaded products to customers.
Its one-side outer flap overlaps on the other side outer flap by a width less than or equal to the container width.
When the overlapping width is less than the container width, we call it an Overlap Slotted Container (OSC);
If the overlapping width is equal to the container width, we call it a Full Overlap Slotted Container (FOL).

Cobot Box Erector
Let’s first talk about the workflow of the box erector robot.
The collaborative robot uses a vacuum sucker to take out the carton blank from the magazine, and the robotic arm opens, erects, and squares the carton.
Then, the robot arm places the erected carton on a long rail to close the minor flaps and then moves the carton along the rail to the pressure-sensitive tape head.
During the movement, two folding plows close the major flaps.
Finally, the carton passes through the tape applicator, and the tape applicator sticks tape on its bottom.
Its biggest advantage is erecting cartons of different sizes in the same cycle without changeover time, as shown in the following video:
Pre-programmed Robotic Carton Erector
Pre-programmed robotic carton erectors are selling very well in China.

When changing carton sizes, all you need to do is:

- Box blank magazine width adjustment
- Adjust the limit block & limit nail against the box blank top
- Push-down plate placement
Then you can click Start on the touch screen, the entire size changeover process only takes 30-60 seconds.
Folding Carton Erector
Speaking of folding carton erectors, many potential clients input small carton erector machines to search for them on Google.

Four vacuum suction cups suck a carton blank from the magazine and move to the top of the pressing & forming station.
When the pressing & forming station’s two baffles are in place, two plows fall to form a pocket for box loading.
At this time, the pressing plate appears from the top of the carton blank, it presses the carton blank down.
The mailer box’s side panel, front panel, and rear panel are erected normally, and its side panel’s closure flaps are also folded.
Then, the pocket carries the erected box to the next station.
In this follow-up station, a tucker folds inward the side closure panel, until the side closure panel adheres to the side panel, and inserts the side closure panel’s tabs into the bottom panel’s socket.
The box erecting is over, then the backward box pushes the finished top-open literature mailer out of the exit.

Carton Erector and Sealer
Some manufacturers integrate the case erector and the case sealer into one machine and also add the packing function. The final combined machine is the “case erector packer sealer”.
Such case erector packer sealer can be connected to the outfeed conveyor of the upstream production equipment, forming a complete automatic carton packaging line.
